Florence Turner Holmes passed away on Aug. 30, 2014, under the care of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. She was 92. Born in Cedartown, Ga., on Feb. 26, 1922, Florence grew up in South Florida before moving to Jacksonville in '38, graduating from Lee High School in '39. She went to Fla. State College for Women and then to UNC Chapel Hill, where she met Air Force cadet Owen Hall Holmes II. They married on Nov. 24, '43, and had four children. After pursuing Owen's military career across the U.S., the family settled in Jacksonville's Arlington area. Owen founded Holmes Stamp Company, where Florence worked full time. During 57 years of marriage, they traveled extensively, visiting 49 countries. Florence loved bowling and bridge, and was a proud member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Florence is predeceased by husband Owen, son Owen Hall Holmes III, and grandson Jeremy Allen, and survived by daughters Helen Allen of Orangedale and Holly Clark of Ridgeland, Miss., son Kennon Holmes of Orange Park, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd.
