Floyd Myers Houser III, 97, passed away on June 12, 2021, in Jacksonville. He was born to Floyd M. and Claire Potter Houser and resided in Jacksonville all of his life. He attended Landon High School.

Floyd was part of the greatest generation serving his country as a Navy Radioman 2nd Class Petty Officer during World War II. He served on several destroyers in Europe and the South Pacific.

He married the love of his life, Helen Ruth Widner in 1946. Together they built a life of love, respect, and devotion while raising seven children. They were married 71 years.

Floyd was a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and licensed insurance agent for Gulf Life and American General Life Insurance companies. He taught CLU courses and mentored many new people in the profession he loved. He received the Huebner Scholarship Award from the Jacksonville CLU Chapter.

In his retirement he became an avid golfer. His proudest moment was when he made a hole in one at Dunes golf course. He was a die-hard UF Gator fan from a young age when his uncle Mike played on the team.

Our father never had a bad word to say about anyone except a few politicians and a couple of college football teams. He always saw the best in everyone.

Floyd was pre-deceased in death by his beloved wife, sister Maurine Poole, brother John, and his parents. He is survived by his brother Lawrence, children Floyd IV (Susan), Randy (Linda), Phillip (Lu Ann), Jeanne Cohen (Ron), Becky Augustyniak (Ed), Jeff (Barbara), Robert, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews. The family would especially like to thank Freddie Matthews for the love and care she provided our father for almost four years.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021 from 10am-11am at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207. Funeral services to begin at 11am with burial at 12pm at Greenlawn Cemetery.

To all my cousins, so sorry I won’t be able to attend Uncle Sonny’s memorial. He was always so kind and happy. I have a lot of great memories of running wild in the neighborhood when I stayed at Grandmoms house with you guys and in the later years Aunt Ruthie ,Uncle Sonny and I had some great visits and even watched some of a gator game! Y’all are all in my thoughts! Love to you all Stephanie

I am blessed and grateful to have known both Floyd and Ruth Houser. Two precious and dear people. Neighbors for over 25 years, they treated me like family. And while Floyd and I differed politically, we shared one more important bond - It’s Great To Be A Florida Gator! So my sweet Floyd , it looks like you finally got your Sky Box seat at The Swamp and I’m stuck in Section 1, row 77. I’ll be looking up at you knowing you’ll be cheering the Gators on. My love, thoughts, and prayers to family.

Dear Uncle Sonny was a model for a life well lived. He was a devoted family man and husband to his lovely wife, Aunt Ruth. What a beautiful couple they were and now together again. They will always be missed.

Uncle Sonny was, first, a man dedicated to his family. His wonderful wife, Ruth, kept the bonds of nieces and nephews strong by always staying touch, and Sonny continued that after she was gone. They raised a beautiful family of 7 children, that were devoted to them both. He will be missed as the last of a generation in the extended Widner family.

Sending a lot of love to the Houser family at the loss of our dear Uncle "Sonny". So many wonderful memories of him; his laugh, his love of family, sports, golf...and of course, his beloved Ruth. Will always hold him dear in my heart as will my children. May you find peace knowing he is fishing, playing golf to his heart's content with all of his family. God bless you all!

I loved your Dad (and your Mom)...he always made me laugh.
What a blessing it was to have such dedicated, loving children who cared for him and allowed him to stay on Holmesdale until the end.
Rest in peace, Mr. & Mrs. Houser, finally together forever.
Thanks for the memories <3
