George Alfred Winterling

George Alfred Winterling, a devoted husband, loving father, and legendary meteorologist, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at the age of 91, in Jacksonville, FL. Born to Otto and Ruth Winterling in Pine Beach, NJ, George's life was a testament to unwavering passion, profound faith, and a spirit of generosity.

In 1941, George's family moved to Jacksonville, FL, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Following his graduation, George joined the U.S. Air Force and proudly served during the Korean War. It was during this time that he discovered his love for meteorology. Upon completion of his service, George married the love of his life, Virginia in 1955 and then attended Florida State University, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Meteorology.

George embarked on a remarkable professional career, leaving a lasting impact on his community as the chief meteorologist for WJXT Channel 4 in Jacksonville, FL. For five decades, George graced the screens of countless households, delivering accurate and entertaining weather forecasts and providing invaluable guidance during severe weather events. His dedication to his craft made him a giant in the world of meteorology, and his genuine concern for the well-being of the people of Jacksonville left an indelible mark on the entire community.

While George was highly accomplished in his career, his true joy came from his faith in Jesus Christ and his love of family. He found solace and strength in his relationship with God, which guided his actions and shaped his character. In his spare time, George delighted in tending to his garden, nurturing the beauty of nature and finding peace among the flowers. He was also an avid supporter of the Florida State Seminoles, eagerly cheering them on during their athletic endeavors.

George leaves behind a profound legacy of kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith. His contributions to the field of broadcast meteorology will be remembered for generations to come, and his impact on the community of Jacksonville, FL, will forever be cherished. George's loving presence, his gentle guidance, and his steadfast commitment to his family and faith will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Carter Winterling. His three children; Frank (Cami) Winterling, Steve (Christine) Winterling, Wendy (Bob) Schwank; his grandchildren; Mike (Erin) Thomason, Jeff (Kimberly) Winterling, Dawn (Matt) Johnston, David (Kelly) Winterling, Jaci Winterling, Sarah (Daniel) Denton, Amanda (David) Wolinski, Alec Winterling, Aliyah Winterling and Cici Winterling; twelve great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members and dear friends who will truly miss his earthly presence.
