Glenn was born on March 8th, 1955 to Kenneth & Helen Knox in Chester, NJ. He attended Princeton University, graduating with a B.A. in Geology and Geophysics (magna cum laude), then went on to complete an M.A. in Biochemistry at Bryn Mawr College, an M.D. at Rutgers Medical School, a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurotology at Baylor College of Medicine, and an Otolaryngology Residency at Vanderbilt University – where he also met his wife, Alisa. Later in life, Glenn also attended law school, receiving his J.D. from the Florida Coastal School of Law and being admitted to the Georgia Bar.
After completing his medical training, Glenn embarked on an illustrious, prolific, and wide-ranging career as a physician, surgeon, researcher, and medical inventor. Over his life, he cared for thousands of patients and helped countless more through his contributions to medical research and technology. His brilliance and commitment lifted him to the top of his field and won him the respect of colleagues near and far – many of whom also became friends and research collaborators.
At the time of his death, Glenn held the positions of:
• Clinical Associate Professor, Univ of FL College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL
• Chief Medical Officer of Immunodominant LLC
• President of Nitinetics LLC, a company that he founded in 2005
Prior to retiring from medical practice in 2022, Glenn served as Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at University of Florida Health – Jacksonville. Other highlights of Glenn’s career include his time as Physician and Owner of the Mandarin Hearing and Balance Center as well as his tenure as Director of the University of Pennsylvania Balance Center.
Throughout Glenn’s career, he was the recipient of multiple awards and honors including The Duval County Medical Society’s John A. Beals Research Award in 2014 and 2024. He was recognized as one of the 40 Most Influential Healthcare Leaders in Jacksonville by 904 Magazine. He also held multiple positions at the Duval County Medical Society, including Past President and delegate to the Florida Medical Association.
As a lifelong enthusiast of astronomy and space exploration, Glenn fulfilled his dream of working with NASA by serving as a NASA Visiting Researcher for more than 30 years. During that time, he was the Principal Investigator for an experiment on Space Shuttle Mission STS-54 and co-investigator on many research experiments pertaining to dizziness, the inner ear, and motion sickness.
Glenn also held 3 US patents for medical devices. One of these, the Self-Crimping Stapedectomy Prosthesis, became an industry standard and has restored or improved hearing for countless patients.
In his work as a researcher, Glenn authored over 60 published papers and gave over 50 presentations locally, nationally, and internationally. His excellence in this area won him multiple research grants, including grants from NASA and The National Institutes of Health. Driving Glenn’s research was an ingenuity and curiosity that never switched off (as family and friends can attest), and he was constantly brainstorming, theorizing, or seeking new knowledge to deepen his understanding of the world.
Even after his retirement, Glenn found new areas to excel in. He immediately reinvented himself as an expert witness – an occupation that allowed him to combine his knowledge of medicine and law – and in a very short time established himself as a highly sought-after expert.
The broad scope of Glenn’s career was exceeded only by that of his hobbies. His range of personal interests was remarkable. He loved mountain climbing, scuba diving with his son-in-law, skiing, ice hockey, golf, sci-fi movies, metal detecting, and coin collecting, and the list was always growing. His son had recently reignited his interest in baseball cards. He and his daughter enjoyed watching Say Yes to the Dress together and he was proud that he could discuss wedding dress appliques intelligently. After he retired, he could be seen daily walking throughout Mandarin.
His sense of humor could be irreverent, goofy, intelligent, or all three at once. He was humble and ambitious in equal measure. He was kind and open-hearted. He was one-of-a-kind and will be dearly missed.
Glenn was predeceased by parents and his father-in-law and favorite golf partner, Brice Kelsey.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alisa Kelsey Knox of Jacksonville, FL, as well as his children, Will Knox (Audrey Gabbert) of Jacksonville, FL and Sarah Knox Brown (Connor Brown) of Cincinnati, OH; sisters, Susan Detwiler (William Detwiler), Lesa Bishop (Julian Bishop) and brothers, Randall Knox, and Robert Knox (Elizabeth Knox); nieces, Emma Bishop, Amy Bishop; nephews, Matthew Knox, Ryan Knox; mother-in-law, Alice Kelsey; sisters-in-law Fran Kelsey and Glenda Kelsey.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mandarin Presbyterian Church for the Northeast Florida Great Banquet at 11844 Mandarin Rd, Jacksonville, FL. Glenn’s faith grew and matured because of the faithful Christian friends, leaders and teachers at both organizations.
