Born and raised in Venice, Florida, to Charles Chidester Johnson and Dorothy (Baily) Johnson, His father taught him to sail at an early age, which would become a life-long passion. Greg attended high school at Phillips Academy, in Andover, Mass. after being recruited there on an athletic scholarship, excelling at football and several other sports.
Greg returned to Florida to attend the University of Florida, graduating with a BA, where he was a member of Florida Blue Key, and was a lifelong Gator supporter and Bull Gator. While at UF, Greg met the love of his life and future wife, Jean (Long), at a football game. Greg and Jean married in 1968 and were married until her death in 2013.
After graduation, Greg attended Law School at Florida State University in Tallahassee and worked as a senior aide to Governor Reuben Askew, and in multiple governmental roles within the state of Florida.
After earning his Juris Doctor, summa cum laude in 1974, Greg and Jean moved to Jacksonville where they raised 3 children, Alise Johnson Henry (Michael), Rebecca Johnson, and Gregory W. Johnson, Jr. There, Greg started what would be a distinguished legal career.

Greg also served as Treasurer and a board member of Aslan House children's charity and was an active member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers.
In his personal life, Greg found joy in the company of his family and friends. His passion for sailboat racing was well-known, reflecting his love for both competition and the tranquility of the sea.
A loving father and family man, Greg is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, Ethan Weiss, Isabella Weiss, Amanda Henry and Charlotte Henry, and sisters Kathleen Shine and Patricia DeBarros.
