Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Milton Newkirk. She is survived by her two sons; Ken (Sally) Newkirk, and Larry (Tillie) Newkirk, Jr.; her four grandchildren, Denise (TJ) Kent, Brett (Lisa) Newkirk, Kristin (Ben) Von Schuch, and Larry (Melissa) Newkirk, III; as well as eight great-grandkids.
Harriet was born on August 1, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida where she remained a life-long resident. She attended Landon High School and left for Tallahassee to attend Florida State College for Women. She returned to Jacksonville and obtained a Master’s of Education degree from Jacksonville University. Harriet taught fourth grade at Riverside Presbyterian Day School for many years. Harriet was one of the founding members of Lakewood Presbyterian Church. There she served in multiple capacities, regularly delivering flowers to those homebound or in the hospital, playing chimes and serving on the Session. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for decades.
Harriet (or Nana, as known by family) turned 90 a month ago. She celebrated in style with a birthday bash, where she was joined by family, friends and four Landon High School classmates, followed by a Caribbean cruise with her children and grandchildren. Nana certainly lived her life to the fullest, even to the very end. Nana was a tough, hardworking, no-nonsense woman who would always let you know where she stood, but loved you with a heart that didn’t judge. Her gift was service. She would cook for, clean, wash and feed her kids, grandkids and great grandkids up to the day she passed. Our family has been been forever shaped by her influence and immeasurably blessed by her life. We thank the Lord for the time he gave us with her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made Lakewood Presbyterian Church.
