Joanne Hedquist Gray was born in Elberton, Georgia on November 26, 1926 and died on July 30, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. Joanne was born to Herbert and Maude Hedquist and was raised in Elberton, where she met her husband of 73 years, Basil Gray. Mom attended Elbert County High School and graduated in 1943 and then attended Piedmont College. Mom and Dad got married on October 9th, 1944 and while living in Elberton, they had 2 daughters, Judy and Frances. They stayed in Elberton until 1953 when they moved their young family to Jacksonville, Florida. In 1955, they moved into their house on Wren Rd and in 1956 had their son Buddy. They would remain in that house until their move to Cypress Village in 2014. Mom started her career with the Duval County School Board in 1966 until she retired in 1988.
Mom was predeceased in death by her husband of 73 years, Basil, her mother and father, brother, John H. Hedquist Jr. and grandson Jason. She leaves to live in her memory, daughters Judy (Arlo) Hill, Frances (Richard) Gupton and son Buddy (Jan) Gray, along with 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The family would also like to thank Mom’s caregivers the last two years; Mae McCoy, Yolanda Armstrong, Michelle Abner, Brittany Chatman and Jeanette Jordan.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 10:00am to 11:00am with a Celebration of Mrs. Gray’s Life beginning at 11:00am at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel followed by a reception.
