It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joe Dennis Thigpen Senior on March 16, 2025. At the age of 85, Joe departed this life, surrounded by the unconditional love and presence of his cherished family.
Joe was born in the tiny town of Sparks, Georgia on August 31, 1939 to Edwin and Kate Thigpen. Joe grew up in a lively and energetic household, shaped by the close bond he shared with his three brothers. After the loss of his father during Joe's childhood, his remarkable mother, Kate, stepped up with unwavering strength and love to raise her four sons, instilling in them resilience and a deep sense of family.
Immediately following high school, Joe enlisted in the Army and proudly served in the 86th Airbourn as a skilled parachute jumper. His bravery and commitment during this time reflected the foundation of resilience and dedication that would define his life.
It was during this time that Joe met the love of his life, Rosemary, and their connection became the foundation of a beautiful journey. Together, they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, devoted to building a loving family, and creating a legacy of togetherness and unwavering commitment.
In 1962, Joe embarked on a journey delivering fuel oil, driven by determination and a vision for the future. Over time, his hard work and dedication blossomed into what is now known as Thigpen Heating and Cooling in Jacksonville, Florida—a thriving business and a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to serving the community.
In 1982, while continuing to lead his heating and cooling business with dedication, Joe also ventured into farming by purchasing a farm in the quaint town of Adel, Georgia. His relentless efforts brought him exceptional rewards, earning him recognition for producing the best cotton in both quantity and quality in the entire. Joe’s success on the farm was a testament to his incredible versatility—not only excelling as a businessman but also proving himself to be an extraordinary farmer.
Though Joe's achievements in business were extraordinary and left an indelible mark, they paled in comparison to the role he cherished most in life: being a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and ultimately a doting great-grandfather. These roles brought him the greatest joy and defined the heart of who he was.
Joe carried the timeless lessons instilled by his beloved mama, Kate, into his own family, ensuring that her values of faith and togetherness thrived for generations. From a young age, he taught his children to place God and family at the center of their lives. Whether it was guiding them to church or working side by side to build their family home with their own hands, Joe lived as the ultimate example of a devoted family man, leaving a legacy of love, faith, and unity.
As Joe's children grew and started families of their own, he remained the cornerstone that kept the family tightly bonded. The farm became a cherished gathering place, where they shared not only hard work—picking and shelling peas, tending to the land—but also unforgettable moments of togetherness. Through these shared experiences and the family traditions he lovingly fostered, Joe ensured that the values of unity, hard work, and love were passed down, becoming deeply rooted in every generation.
Joe's entire life stood as a shining testament to his unwavering faith in Jesus. As the longest-serving member of North Jacksonville Baptist Church at the time of his passing, his devotion to his faith and community was evident to all who knew him. His life, filled with purpose, love, and steadfast belief, was its own powerful testimony—and truly, what a remarkable life it was!
Joe is preceded in joining the Lord by his loving parents, Kate and Edwin, his dear brother Warren, and his cherished grandson, Michael Seth Hayes. Their memories live on, woven into the legacy of a life well lived!
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosemary, who stood by his side through a lifetime of love and partnership. His legacy continues through his daughter, Caryl Hayes, and her husband, Michael Hayes, as well as his son, Joey Thigpen Jr., and his wife, Sherrill P. Thigpen. Joe’s cherished grandchildren—Whitney Danese, Ashley Thigpen, Lindsay Thigpen, and JD (Joe Dennis Thigpen III)—along with his beloved great-grandchildren—Mackenzie Danese and Kamdyn Danese—and his Brothers Gilbert Thigpen, sister in law Helen Thigpen, Bruce Thigpen and sister in law Carol Thigpen. These family member as well as many many more carry forward the love, values, and traditions that he so deeply instilled.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in honor of Joe to the Salvation Army.
