

It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the peaceful passing of John Lewis Highsmith on April 12, 2026, at the age of 95. He was with family in the comfort of his home, following a battle with health issues over the last year. John was a beacon of wisdom, kindness, and love. He was the finest example of a follower of Christ and whose legacy will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on September 29, 1930, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to parents Eve Diffenderfer and John H. Highsmith Jr., John was a man of remarkable intellect and unwavering dedication to his passions. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Barbara Atwell, with whom he shared a life full of love and adventure. Their marriage, which began on January 6, 1952, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised three wonderful children.
John was also predeceased by his cherished daughter, Linda Highsmith, his parents, and his sister, Marion Smith. He is survived by his sons, Gary Highsmith and his wife Laura, and son Darryl Highsmith, and his step-grandson, Matthew Sanzalone. John's legacy continues through his granddaughter, Selina Gawriluk, her husband Kris, and his great-grandson Kannon, all of whom brought joy to his later years.
A distinguished scholar, John graduated from Clay County High School in 1948. His academic journey led him to the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, focusing on Math and Science, in 1955. He furthered his education at the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Educational Administration in 1957, and completed his Master's in Math/Science Education at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1962.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an A1C Cartographer from January 1950 to September 1953. He was very proud of his military service and his dedication was a hallmark of his character.
With a profound passion for education, John spent a remarkable 47 years teaching, beginning his career at St. Johns River Community College from August 1962 to May 1993, and then at Duval County Public Schools until his retirement in May 2002. He was a mentor and inspiration to countless students throughout his career.
John's love for music was evident as he served as a choir director at various churches throughout his life. His commitment to helping others extended beyond the classroom, as he generously donated nearly 90 gallons of blood, embodying his selfless nature and dedication to community service.
In his leisure time, John found joy in reading and solving puzzles. He and Barbara shared a passion for travel, embarking on over 30 cruises, creating memories that spanned the globe.
John's life was a rich tapestry of love, service, and learning. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and dedication that will continue to inspire future generations. His gentle spirit and unwavering love for his family and community will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember his extraordinary journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in John's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving.
