Margaret "Marty" Sutton passed away very peacefully and serenely during the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 27th, 2015, after a very long and valiantly fought battle against the horrible and devastating diseases of Alzheimer's and crippling osteoporosis. She was born in Dalton, Georgia, January 11,1927, and had just recently been celebrated for her 88th birthday. She was a kind and beautiful lady, smart & self-reliant, multi-talented, devout Christian and a long time member of her Southside Baptist Church located in San Marco. She was loved by all she met and will be most sorely missed and already is.
Margaret loved to travel, cook and bake delicious goodies for her kids and friends and grandkids, watch football & cheer for the Gators, sing, spend time with all her loved ones, and visit and worship with her friends at church (she loved her Sunday School class & WMU group and volunteering on the church rotation for the "counting" committee). She was born and raised on a small farm in rural north Georgia (Dalton). She attended Dalton High School and after graduation moved to Rome, GA, where she met Lionel Sutton after the end of WWII. They married in 1946, and were married for 63 years (Margaret was widowed on October 15, 2009). They had 5 children. The family moved to Florida in 1960, where Margaret spent the rest of her long, full and happy life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother in Ft. Lauderdale (5 years), Cocoa (3 years), Orlando (1 1/2 years) and Jacksonville (1969-2015).
Margaret is survived by her 5 children, Barry Sutton (Dunwoody, GA), Judy Turner (Cocoa Beach, FL), DiAnne Parrish (Rockledge, FL), Steve Sutton (Merritt Island, FL) and David Sutton; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren (+ 3 "due" in 2015) and sisters Carolyn Hawkins and Mary Jo Scarborough (both of Pensacola, FL) and many nieces & nephews whom she loved.
Margaret's children believe she would want them to take a moment to also share with others, who may be reading this obituary, some thoughts on how to learn from some of the bad things that happen as a result of the stealthy onset of this insidious and currently untreatable disease, Alzheimer's, so they may hopefully avoid some of them one day themselves. Children and loved ones of elders who may be exhibiting the first signs of confusion, forgetfulness and dementia, should please pay close attention to the actions and finances of your parents! As their ability to reason logically starts to fade they become easy prey for the unscrupulous and evil minions of Satan and other "lowlife scum of the earth" who target them in all manner of scams, promising to deliver various riches such as lottery winnings, free cars or other types of services and or companionship. Lionel & Margaret were victims of these fraudulent and hateful practices with the intent to steal their life savings through dishonesty and stealth. Many of these "scurvy predators" seem to be based offshore in places like Jamaica and Spain, although some are local. They are highly skilled at convincing seniors they are their friends and have only their best interests at heart. They also convince your loved ones, as was in Margaret & Lionel'scase, to keep this a secret from their family and use money trading organizations such as Western Union to subvert funds, stock, pension and mortgage refinancing proceeds. You will find that all the various law enforcement agencies in this country have very little interest in protecting at risk seniors from these "dirty thieves and cowards" and will do little or nothing to help you when you turn to them after the fact. It is beyond disgraceful and an indelible black stain of neglect and shame on our local, state & national government, and each and every one of these aforementioned organizations, that needs to be addressed immediately. The only real way to avoid all this heartache is by early recognition and intervention. Also, be very careful in the way you may set up any guardianship arrangements performing thorough research before taking that big step. They are very hard to revoke once started. Get a quote of all the expenses in writing beforehand and only as a last resort should you turn your parents over to the state's guardianship.
The children of Margaret sincerely hope that the above tips will help someone who has yet to encounter these types of heinous situations. If it helps even one family to avoid the heartache it will inflict on both the parents and the loved ones involved, it will be worth our having posted this on their Mother's behalf and would make them, for the sake of their beloved mother, very happy.
Margaret has now gone on to Heaven to be with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the loved ones that have preceded her to the golden streets of glory above.
May God Bless and hold her in His healing arms. She will always be remembered lovingly and will be kept in all of our prayers, close to our hearts for all eternity. God's will be done, forever and ever. Amen.
