Mary Louise Stout, age 89, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025. Mary Louise was born February 19, 1935 in Spencer County, KY to parents Burjett Sanford Harrod and Zelda May (Barnes) Harrod. She graduated Shelbyville High School in 1952 and moved to Louisville, KY to receive her nursing training at Norton Infirmary. It was there she met Walter Allan Stout, Jr. whom she would marry in 1955 upon completion of her nursing degree. The couple settled in Louisville and soon moved to Jeffersontown, KY, where they had four sons and a full life. In 1969 they moved to Jacksonville, FL, where Mary Louise worked as a nurse until her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed nursing and the opportunities it provided to meet new people and move to new places. Yet, nursing was always more than a job for her. In caring for her patients, Mary Louise made sure they weren’t simply treated as a patient but were also cared for as persons.
Mary Louise’s sense of purpose came from the care she provided for her family, as well. She was a strong supporter of each of her sons – making sure they worked hard in school, and attending as many of their sporting games and meets as she could. Even moving to Florida to ensure their two sons with special needs received the best of assistance and serving on the State of Florida ad hoc Committee On Autism. She was just as involved with and proud of her grandsons and great grandsons.
Church and faith were important in her life. As a child she went to church with neighbors, participating when she could. After marrying Walter, Mary Louise became a faithful member of Jeffersontown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), then of Southside Christian Church and First Christian Church both of Jacksonville. Through t
he years she served as an elder, deacon, youth leader and Sunday School teacher.
Mary Louise enjoyed gardening, crafting of many varieties (needlepoint, sewing, woodburning and more), baking & cooking, and camping at the beach. And was pleased to have been named an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Mary Louise will lovingly be missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents and siblings, she is preceded in passing by her loving husband of 32 years. Mary Louise is survived by her sons: Mark (Suzanne) Stout, Michael Stout, Timothy Stout, David Sean Stout; grandsons: Ian (Brooklyn) Stout, Connor Stout, Corey Stout; great grandsons: Jameson and Warrick Stout all of Jacksonville, FL; plus several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Autism Society of Florida (AutismFL.org) Community Hospice of Jacksonville (CommunityHospice.com).
A graveside service for Mary Louise will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hardage - Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
