Mervyn White Rickard was born in Jacksonville on October 7, 1931 to Clois and David H. White, and passed away on January 6, 2014 after an extended illness. Upon graduation from High School, she married Norman and opened Mervyn's School of Dance where it became a family affair with her mother, Mrs.White, sewing the costumes and Norm designing and building sets for the annual recitals. Mervyn taught thousands of beloved students in an amazing career that spanned over 55 years. “Miss” Mervyn's signature red hair brightened every doorway. She loved jewelry and music and a good story, but was perhaps best known and loved for her compassion and generosity. No details were unimportant when it came to her students. They were always at the center of her life's spotlight. Beyond costume sequins and ballet shoes, Mervyn's most important legacy was instilling a sense of beauty, poise, independence and discipline with those fortunate enough to call her dance studio a "home away from home." Among her many achievements included being named Artistic Director of Ballet Guild of Jacksonville, President of SE Regional Ballet Association, one of the original four Artistic Directors of The Nutcracker Ballet, serving on the board of Dance Masters of America, and numerous other affiliated organizations. A gifted teacher and mentor, she groomed countless students who later became professional dancers and teachers in their own right all around the country. She is survived by her husband, Norman; daughter Kim (Bill) Tate, daughter Marnie (Alan) Deal; grandchildren, Travis, Adam, Madison and Olivia; her brother, David (Margie) White; nieces and nephews; numerous dear friends and, of course, her beloved dog, Clancy. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Chapel 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207 (904) 346-3808. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, January 17th at 4:00pm at the Hendricks Chapel. Please make contributions to Community Hospice or any charity of your choice.
