FITZPATRICK - Mildred Fitzpatrick passed away peacefully at her home in Jacksonville, Florida on April 26,2020 surrounded by her loving family. She lived a happy, healthy and productive life for most of her 93 years. Her husband and best friend of 50 years, Eugene Fitzpatrick, also passed away peacefully at home in 2000.
Mildred’s first priority and passion has always been her family. She and Eugene provided a warm and welcoming home for their 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren (named below), along with many, many extended relatives and friends. They hosted annual Christmas and summertime beach gatherings , often for 30 or more people, during which good food and lots of laughter were always in abundance.
After many transfers with the L&N, Seaboard Coastline and CSX railroads, they finished raising their family in Huntington and Amityville on Long Island, NY. Their final transfer was with CSX to their headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida where they eventually retired.
Mildred and Gene loved antiques and eventually became dealers on Long Island spending much of their free time together going to shows, refinishing antique furniture and constantly learning. At 90, Mildred was still frequently visiting estate sales and antique malls. Her other joys in life involved a love for plants and flowers and watching her backyard birds. She also enjoyed doing needlepoint and embroidery, producing many hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, needlepoint pillows and wall hangings over the years.
Mildred also dedicated many years to St. Luke’s Hospital volunteering her time in the gift shop creating beautiful wreaths and dry flower arrangements to raise money for the hospital, all while spreading her warmth and joy to everyone she met. She served a term as the President of volunteer association.
There will be a Celebration of her life in New York to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Mildred and Eugene’s favorite charities, “American Gold Star Mothers” (an organization of mothers who have lost children in the military) at https://www.goldstarmoms.com/

The older mom got, the more at peace she became, and we’re reminded of this verse of scripture: “Be still and know that I am God.”
