Chief, Mr. Revels, thank you for your support and mentorship of this young Sailor around 1993/94. As a Chief Gunnersmate at Naval Station Staten Island Shore Intermediate Maintenance Facility (SIMA) one of your many duties was to administer the Naval Safety Program to include its many scientific studies and inspections. You had zero time in your 60 hour weeks yet still made sure I would have materials to study and a target to focus on. I appreciate the time you afforded me to study your professional textbooks and allowed me to visit you and your family in your home. Your hospitality and leadership demonstrated your Honor, Courage, and Commitment as a Chief Petty Officer, Father, and Man. Rest in Peace Chief Revels, I look forward to saluting you in Heaven as I cross the Quarterdeck to eternity. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

I came across this by chance and am so saddened. I served in the USN with Phil aboard the USS Long Beach CGN-9. We worked in the Terrier Missile System. I was in the second house and Phil in the first. We had many good times stateside and overseas. I left the USN in 1980. I had heard that Phil went on to make Chief. Phil is among many of our shipmates who died too young. RIP Phil.

As a little kid, I remember visiting Uncle Phil and Aunt Rowena’s on the weekends/holidays. I miss watching movies, shooting fireworks, playing baseball, and opening presents during Christmas at his house. You always knew where you stood with him as he was never shy in sharing his thoughts with you. He was the hardest working man I know. Now as I look back being a father and husband, Uncle Phil was instrumental in teaching me how to raise my children and to be a faithful husband who puts god first. I will always remember and cherish his teachings about different civilizations, especially Native American culture and topics on religion.  There will never be another Uncle Phil. I miss you and hope that you and dad are sharing good laughs up in heaven. I will mourn you until I join you, and strive to honor your name.

My name is Wilbur Shirley. I remember the day that I asked Phillip to marry his daughter. I felt ten feet tall when he said yes, because she's the love of my life. I remember him sitting beside me in church. I remember him sitting beside me at the dinner table. I remember attending car shows and football games with him too. I remember the stories of his family in North Carolina. It sounded like he loved them a lot. If I had to summarize who I thought Phillip Revels was, I would have to say that he was a real man. Now I can't say that about everyone, but he was definitely a real man. He could look you straight in the eye and tell you his thoughts. Your reaction would be entirely up to you. Hard work made him happy. He wasn't scared to sweat. My favorite thing about Phillip was that he loved Jesus Christ. If God ever has an important job that he needs to accomplish in heaven, then I believe Phillip would be the man that God would put in charge of it. Phillip would say, " God, I've got this". Phillip loved his wife Rowena. She was the love of his life. He was the love of her life. He loved her cooking. She was his favorite person on this earth. She took very good care of him. He loved his daughter too. He was her hero. Another thing I like about Phillip was his tag on the front bumper of his truck. It reads, "Native American and Proud of it". I thought that was so cool. Phillip. I'm going to miss you man. I was in the same room with him, when he took his last breath. Phillip I'll see you on the other side. Tell God hello for me, and that we send our love. I love you Phil.

One memory that sticks out to me was when I was in junior high.  Alma and I were watching scary movies like we loved to do.  We were sitting in your living room unaware that you were home.  I will never forget the crazy scare you gave us when you suddenly appeared in the kitchen at the same time something crazy was happening in the movie.  We screamed so loud but had a great laugh after.  Your presence was so great and could easily intimidate but we also know what a great softy you were.  Especially in your love for auntie and Alma.  Rest in paradise, rest in peace now uncle.  We will always be here for auntie and Alma but you will be greatly missed.

Uncle Phillip had a GREAT sense of humor! I remember one particular phone call - almost 20 years ago to the day.... Chris and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii. Soon after we checked into our suite, I remembered something I just had to ask my best friend, Alma. I dropped everything while Chris was busy checking out our suite and picked up the phone. Uncle Phillip answered and immediately said, "Tessa, is that you? Aren't you supposed to be on your honeymoon?" I said, "Yes, Uncle but I really need to talk to Alma about something." He said, "Well, I'm pretty sure this is NOT what your new husband had in mind when he thought about your honeymoon!" Ha! We laugh about that conversation to this day. You will be missed, Uncle.
