Phyllis Baker Maddox passed away on September 30, 2022. She was born November 17, 1937, in Covington, Virginia to Albra K. Baker and Irene B. Baker. Phyllis grew up in Sweet Springs, West Virginia and was educated in the local schools in Monroe County, West Virginia. She married Larry Maddox and moved to Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950s. They were blessed with two children, Pam and Michael. Phyllis lived in the same house she and Larry built and in which their children were raised, until her passing. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a skilled self-taught seamstress who had an uncanny ability to make almost anything with her hands, from dolls to clothes to furniture reupholstery. Until the end, Phyllis was a sports fan who loved the Gators, the WVU Mountaineers, the Jaguars and whatever baseball and softball teams her beloved grandchildren played on. Her one unfulfilled desire was to watch her grandson play college baseball for the UNF Ospreys and to see where her softball talents would take her granddaughter, Charlotte.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Michael Maddox and his wife, Julie, and her two grandchildren, Eli Maddox and Charlotte Maddox. She is also survived by her brother, Arden Baker and his wife, Judy. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, daughter, Pam, sister Jean and her brother, Charles.
Her family is so grateful to St. Catherine Laboure Place and Community Hospice who took such good care of her in the waning weeks of her life.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Spring Glen United Methodist Church 6007 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida 32216. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
