On July 15, 2016, God finally answered the prayers of Rev. Robert Augustus Welsh and threw wide the pearly gates to welcome the latest addition to the heavenly choir. After 97 years, Bob gladly joined his family in Heaven, leaving his eldest son Robert Allen Welsh with his wife Judy; three granddaughters and their families, including two great grandchildren, plus his daughter Marcia and her husband Michael Davis, to celebrate his release. Bob’s wife Virginia, his younger son Mark, all of Bob’s 5 brothers and his sister had predeceased him and were there to welcome his arrival.
Bob served a multitude of churches in several states during his years as a Presbyterian minister, with his wife of 59 years by his side, often accompanying him on organ and piano. He also taught English in an all-black middle school/high school until he retired from teaching in 1984. He continued in the ministry until 1986 when he retired again, and Virginia retired from being a school administrative assistant. They then vacationed in every state in the continental US and even made it to Hawaii and Alaska. Eventually they moved from Fort Pierce, FL to Westminster Woods on Julington Creek to be closer to their daughter, Marcia.
There will be a hymn sign in Bob’s memory in the auditorium at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek at 3PM on August 11, 2016. Bob’s ashes will be interred with his wife’s at the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benevolence Fund at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek, 25 State Road 13, Jacksonville, FL 32259.
