Rivers was one of my best friends while I was stationed at Campbell. He came to Houston with me, and met my family. He actually almost crashed on the way back because he was jamming to future to hard, haha... He was a great friend. Funny, lovable, and genuine. He will be missed. 

My Letter/Message To Sgt. Shaw Rivers

Cousin, oh my dear precious sweet genuine loving little cousin Tank Tank... my love for you will always be eternal and knows no bounds. I will not allow this unfortunate tragedy to tarnish my memory of you or change my familial love for you as it is truly unconditional and I knew of your loving heart. I will miss having those deep conversations about life, discussing our future, growth, and goals. I will even miss the not so deep, but random conversations about our unique interests, funny scenarios, and day to day experiences. I will miss your laugh, voice, awkward hugs, smile, and overall randomness. You were my confidant in that I was able to tell you any and everything without fear of judgement and you always made me smile even when I was feeling down. You were always supportive of my hopes, dreams, growth, and what I could be to the point you were more excited at the thought of me having a child than I was myself. You were happy for me when I couldn't feel happiness for myself and always had positive words of encouragement and good advice. I always wished you happiness as well and  now wish there was something more I could've done or said to change the outcome. It wasn't supposed to be like this Tank. Remember, during Aunty Lil' Bit's services (your grandmother/my great aunt) we discussed our own mortality and how we would act just as Uncle Charles did depending on who passed away first from old age. I know life is unpredictable, but I didn't think I would lose you so soon after that conversation especially since we discussed being wrinkled and frail when the time came, but I don't know what to do now. To be honest I would like to do the impossible, which is to bring you back or rewind time because I am having a difficult time accepting you are physically gone. I am truly heartbroken and wish I could awkwardly hug you tight and never let go, but instead I will present you with this letter.

Shaw Rivers, he was a special person in my life. He was like a big brother for me. Shaw helped me  to become a better soldier always motivating me to be great in this career. Shaw opened the doors of his house for me when i had nobody, he was there to help me out on everything. He is one friend that will always have a place in my heart. I will always have Shaw on my mind and prayers, so as his family. Rest in peace Big Brother Shaw Rivers. Your brother Sanchez. 

Bro, I'm not good with words and expressing myself but I can't believe it's you with R.I.P. in front of your name. We connected instantly at Fort Campbell and built a lifetime bond. You were like my little bro and I'm definitely going to cherish those memories. Fly High!!

Korea 2018-2019 will forever be with me. You were always there during my downfalls and I am so sorry I couldn’t be there for yours!  You pushed me to become better. Every time we talked it was always, “eat right, go to the gym and get that rank cause you see what I don’t see in myself”..... man you were my only guy friend and I will forever miss you!!!but don’t worry  I will come visit you soon and tell you everything !. Fly High, fam!!! Forever gone but will never be forgotten!!!

Damn man still seem unreal to me. You was like my brother from another mother foreal, literally did everything together back then. You was a real good friend/brother that i could always count on no matter what. Even when i move to texas in 2017, we still kept in touch like daily until this day. We had hella of good time over the years to many to even name. And good memories ill never forget and cherish to this day.  Rest easy my boy! 

Shaw L. Rivers, Jr., (Tank is who I'll always remember you by) I'm  really going to miss you.  Your smile, laughter and demeanor.  You have always been a curious young man.  Always asking questions about the military and school.  I hope I gave you sufficient answers.  I want you to know,  I'm very proud of you and your accomplishments.  I knew that you had much more to accomplish.  I will always keep a space open for you.  You are not just my nephew, you are frater in armis, A Brother in  Arms.

SGT Shaw L. Rivers Jr. was one of the Soldiers under my care, and one of the best friends I could ever hope for while stationed at Fort Campbell 2019-2020. He was such a bright young man, an amazing father, and wonderful friend with unlimited potential and a bright future a head of him. He had a positive impact on everyone he met and will be greatly missed.  His time was too soon, but he will never be forgotten. Condolences and prayers from my family to yours.
