Shirley held a business degree from Georgia State University, and continued with post-graduate studies. Throughout her career, she taught business skills before retiring from Jacksonville State College.
Always ready to serve, Shirley was an active member of Southside Baptist Church, where she gave countless volunteer hours to lead and support the Blind Fellowship, in particular. As a healthy sighted individual who gradually lost her sight to macular degeneration, she chose to use her situation to serve others rather than fall victim to her disability.
Shirley and her husband Bill, both educators in higher education, loved working with students and truly enjoyed time spent with them, both in and out of the classroom. They also loved to travel, and had the opportunity to explore other locations and cultures with friends and colleagues.
Shirley is predeceased in death by their daughter, Paula Vessels, and her husband, William (Bill) Vessels. Bill passed away in January of this year.
A virtual memorial service was held for family and close friends on Tuesday, September 28, presided over by Pastor Gary Webber.Shirley will be buried with her husband Bill in Jacksonville National Cemetery on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 11:30 AM and is open to all who would like to attend.
The family would like to thank Pastor Gary Webber and members of Southside Baptist Church for their years of care and friendship for Shirley and her family. Gratitude also goes to staff at Cypress Village’s Long Term Care, where Shirley spent the past eight years. Lastly, the family would like to thank those who cared for Shirley during her final days at Mayo Clinic where she lost her battle with COVID. The doctors, nurses, and hospice staff showed remarkable skill, but also remarkable heart and caring.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Shirley’s memory to Southside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL, or to the organization of your choice that supports services for the blind.
