Born on July 23, 1953, in New York, NY, Sonia was raised in the heart of Spanish Harlem. Her childhood in El Barrio was filled with the vibrant culture, music, and traditions of her Puerto Rican heritage - roots that remained central to her identity throughout her life.
In 1970, Sonia married the love of her life, Luis Moreno. Together, they raised two sons - Sean and Jason Moreno and eventually relocated to Florida, where she spent the later years of her life.
Sonia’s love language was through her food – she loved and connected to those around her with meals and hospitality. She embraced life fully, with a contagious curiosity and sense of adventure. She loved fishing, traveling, amusement parks, and learning new things. She was fierce and lived life courageously with both fire and grace.
She had a deep appreciation for life’s small joys—puzzles, perfumes, and beautiful trinkets.
She loved collecting Santas and Nutcrackers as Christmas was her most favorite holiday .
Sonia fought for what she believed in and carried herself with the beauty she wanted to see in the world around her. Her laughter and aura could light up a room.
She simultaneously lived a life full of love and endured its hardships with resilience and wonder. Sonia lived unapologetically—with joy, strength, conviction and understanding.
She is survived by her son, Sean Moreno; six grandchildren, Brandon, Gianni, Jesmel, Valerie, Isaiah, and Anthony; her sisters; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives she touched with warmth and love.
She is preceded—and now reunited—in death with her beloved husband Luis, her mother Hilda, and her son Jason.
Sonia’s light, spirit, and fierce love will continue to guide all those she leaves behind.
A graveside service for Sonia will be held Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 1pm at Evergreen Cemetery, 1 South Allapaha Avenue, Davenport, FL 33837.
