Born in Clinton, North Carolina, on May 22, 1934, Susan was the youngest of six children of Lannie James Tew and Lona Pearl (Gainey) Tew. She grew up surrounded by the love of her siblings—Nina, Hazel, John, Carmen, and Raymond—and carried that same warmth and loyalty throughout her life.
Susan was a devoted mother to four children: Anthony “Tony,” Pamela, Joy, and Larry “Keith,” whom she raised with care and resilience. Her family was her heart, and she found joy in their milestones, their laughter, and the bonds they shared.
For many years, Susan worked as a trusted bookkeeper for Logan Diving Company in Jacksonville, where her diligence and attention to detail were deeply valued. Outside of work, she loved to travel and found happiness in the simple pleasures of exploring new places with friends and family.
Later in life, Susan found companionship and comfort in her beloved dogs, Lisa the toy poodle and Chloe the chihuahua. They brought her much joy and were her cherished little companions.
Susan endured deep losses with grace and strength. She was preceded in death by her children Tony Jernigan, Pamela Albritton, and Joy Miller, and her grandson Gino Albritton.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Larry Keith Jernigan of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren—Ryan Jernigan, Ross Jernigan, Mister Albritton, Janis Barley, Omar Albritton, Ali Albritton, Matt Miller, Carolyn Jernigan, and Melanie Jernigan—and eight great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry forward her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and love.
A memorial service celebrating Susan’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida. Following a reception, there will be an inurnment for both Susan Armel and her beloved daughter Joy Miller.
Susan’s presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
