We gather to remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Mario Dominic Lombardi, whose journey began in Hamtramck, Michigan on May 13, 1931, born to Giuseppe and Lugia Facchin Lombardi. In 1933, the family returned to his mother's hometown of Maserda Sul Piave, Italy, where they built a small farm home and endured the challenging years of World War II. During the German occupation, their home was commandeered by soldiers, and Mario was tasked with digging trenches, earning payment in cigarettes. Despite the hardships, their resilience carried them through the war.
Driven by a dream to return to America, Mario made his way back, settling first in Detroit and later in Farmington Hills, Michigan. His exceptional talent and determination led to a successful career as an automotive designer working with the Big Three—Chrysler, Chevrolet, and Ford. In 1955, Mario married his first love, Rosa DeBatista, and together they built a loving family with four children: Cindy, Donna, Steve, and Jeff. Their union blossomed into five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Upon retiring in 1985, Mario and Rosie relocated to Jensen Beach, Florida, where they delighted in the sunshine, sandy shores, and golfing adventures—returning twice to his beloved Italian hometown. Their move inspired many fellow Michigan retirees to join them in Florida. After Rosie’s passing, Mario found renewed joy with his second wife, Francesca Rinaldi, and later shared a cherished relationship with Gerri Pileggi.
Mario's quick, sarcastic wit brought laughter to all who knew him. His marvelous culinary skills, especially his northern Italian dishes, have become treasured family traditions passed down through generations. He was an avid golfer, famously achieving a hole-in-one, and his passion for gardening attracted admirers who often asked to hire him. Above all, Mario loved his family deeply and was known as a kind and generous father, and a smiling, happy Nono to his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Martin De Porres Catholic Church in Jensen Beach and Treasure Coast Hospice, honoring Mario’s legacy of warmth, generosity, and community spirit.
He will forever be remembered for his compassion, humor, and the enduring love he shared with those around him. Let’s remember him by enjoying his favorite cocktail a Manhattan.
