Born on January 6, 1932, in Athens, Tennessee, Don lived a life defined by purpose, service, and devotion—to his family, his faith, his work, and his community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Creed and Rebecca Lockmiller; his first wife, Bobbie Lockmiller of Cleveland, TN; his brother, A.C. Lockmiller of Athens; and his sisters, Margaret Cline of Athens and Jean Sevier of Memphis.
Don graduated from McMinn County High School in 1949 and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College for two years before transferring to East Tennessee State University, where he graduated in 1953. Following his graduation, he proudly served two years in the U.S. Army.
Don spent most of his professional life in banking. He began his career at Third National Bank in Nashville and, in 1992, moved to Johnson City, where he worked in commercial lending at First Tennessee Bank until retiring in 1998.
A man of steadfast faith, Don was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City. He served as an elder, served on numerous committees, and was honored as Elder Emeritus for his years of leadership and service.
His commitment to the community extended well beyond the church. Don was a 32nd-degree Mason and an active participant in civic organizations throughout his life. In Johnson City, he was involved with the Optimist Club and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for several years.
Don had a deep appreciation for the arts and the outdoors. In his early years, he enjoyed painting in oils and watercolors, reading, traveling, tennis, and golf. He continued to read and play golf well into his later years. Don was also known for his dry, deadpan sense of humor—he loved to tease, often delivering a perfectly timed comment with a completely serious expression before breaking into a grin. He will be remembered for his warm personality, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather—and a cherished friend to many.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; his son, David Lockmiller (Jenny), of Johnson City; his daughter, Julie Duguay (Bob), of Indianapolis; his son, Brad Carson (Paige), of Center Grove, Indiana; and his daughter, Laurie Boicourt (Vic), of Scottsburg, Indiana. He is also survived by five grandchildren—Jesse Morris, Kayla Morris, Kyle Carson, Janelle Robertson, and Jaycie Miller—and three great-grandchildren: Carson Goines, Cyrus Carson, and Lucas Carson.
The family would like to thank Nikki Thompson, who has been his caregiver and companion.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:00 pm on April 22 at First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City, with visitation beginning at 4:00 pm. Pastor Paul Helphinstine will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 105 South Boone Street, Johnson City, TN 37604.
Monte Vista Funeral Home is honored to care for Mr Donald Lockmiller's family at this time.
