James Carlton “Jim” Donnelly, age 76, of Erwin, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 8, 2021 in the James H. Quillen VAMC. Jim was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late George Carlton and Wanda Donnelly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Patrick Carlton.
Jim joined the United States Air Force at age 18 and upon completing his tour, went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in manufacturing management from Purdue University. He enjoyed a fulfilling career that allowed him to move within the United States, as well as abroad. He was able to retire at age 55 to enjoy time with his family, pursue his study in genealogy, and broaden his passion for art.
Jim’s connection to the area stems from his Grandfather, Major James Conklin Donnelly, who was a director at Mountain Home VA. Having been born in the area, there was always a calling to return home to his roots, so he moved to Erwin to enjoy his later years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Linda A. Donnelly; one son, Keith E. Donnelly; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
At Jim’s request, no public services will be held. Jim’s cremated remains will be interred at the Mountain Home National Cemetery along with his grandfather, Major Donnelly, father George C. Donnelly, and favorite cousin, William Booth.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in Jim’s memory to any veteran’s charity.
Arrangements especially for Mr. James Carlton “Jim” Donnelly and his family have been made through Monte Vista Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 1900 E. Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, TN; 423-282-2631.
