Mary Maxalyn (Maxie) Peterson Hunter, age 88, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Princeton Transitional Care. She was born on August 4, 1936 in Yancey County, North Carolina a daughter of the late Clyde Burt Peterson and Myrtle McIntosh Peterson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Hunter; and older sister, Billie Clyde Johnson.
Maxie married James Cecil Hunter in Yancey County in 1957. Maxie graduated from Burnsville High School in 1953 and Warren Wilson Junior College in 1955 and then attended ETSC. She was a former member of Central Baptist Church in Douglasville, GA and a current member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN.
She is survived by three sons, Jim Hunter, of Chester, VA, Louie Hunter, of Marietta, GA and Blake Hunter, of Jonesborough, TN; one daughter, Maria Anderson, of Marion, NC; four grandsons and two granddaughters; two sisters, Jackie and Helen Peterson, of Burnsville, NC; six great grandchildren; and one great grandchildren on the way.
Per her wishes, cremation was held and a memorial service to be held at a later date.
