Stanley E. Smith Sr., age 81, of Johnstown, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. He was born on November 27, 1941, in Granville, Ohio, to the late Fred and Lillie (Maharg) Smith. Stanley put in 42 years of work at the Licking County Highway Department before retiring in 2006. He couldn't sit still, so he put in another few years of work for Green Hill Cemetery in Johnstown and helped prepare plots so that families could lay their loved ones to rest.
He always kept busy whether it was fixing something of his own or helping someone else. Over the years, he repaired many mowers, chainsaws, and weed eaters for friends and family. He never expected payment, it was just a hobby of his - nothing more - but most did pay him for his service.
Stanley enjoyed taking drives to Newark and shopping; he enjoyed watching the news & weather on TV; he enjoyed country western movies and the TV shows Pawn Stars & Ice Road Truckers; he enjoyed when his family was around, and he loved his grandkids.
Stanley is survived by his son, Eddie (Jen) Smith of Newark; daughter, Robin (Josh) Smith of Newark; grandchildren, Brett, Ethan, Owen, and AvaLynn; sisters, Ginny Huffman & Georgine Kokensparger; brothers, Vernon & James Smith; a few in-laws, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 44 years, Linda; brothers, Arthur "Pete", Clarence & Glennie Smith; and sisters, Lucille Wicker & Margaret Opal Smith.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2023 for Stanley and his wife, Linda. The family will reach out with the date later.
From his children:
Boy, oh boy, you ended 2022 with a bang, and in turn, left a hole in our hearts. So many memories and stories - if everyone only knew! You were stubborn but meant well. You showed us you loved us in your own way, and we were okay with that. We thank you for everything you taught us growing up, and for any help you ever gave when we needed it. We are thankful for the time we spent with you and wouldn't change a thing. Rest easy, Dad, and tell Mom we love and miss her. In memory of our father, go save a dollar.
