Van was raised in Whatley, AL by his grandparents, Willie Mae Johnson and Lem Johnson. He graduated from Clarke County High School where he remained in touch with classmates, cousins and friends. Van left Alabama at an early age to pursue a career in construction work in which he ultimately mastered. He left footprints in Mobile, AL, Akron, OH, Boston, MA, Virginia and finally taking up residency in Atlanta, GA where he worked for Benning Construction Company for the past several years. He was well known for the work he mastered and spread his knowledge and services throughout the community. You could call Van and ask him about anything you needed fixing. If he couldn’t fix it, he referred you to some who could. Van Johnson had a presence bigger than life and was loved by everyone he met. You were always greeted with a smile and a bear hug. He had the most distinctive laugh that bellowed throughout the room. Van loved his family and was ever present in our lives. Matter of fact, he loved everybody and often said that. Seems like he knew every family member there was, where they lived and how they were related. Van had so many friends, and was always there to lend a helping hand. He will truly be missed.
Van is survived by his brother, Dan Johnson; 2 sons, Lee Austin Johnson of Boston, MA and Vandy Duncan Johnson Phillips of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife Omeria Love Johnson and leaves to cherish his loving memories, a host of uncles and aunts and cousins and friends.
Life’s Journey
Life is but a stopping place, a pause in what’s to be, a resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, different paths along the way, we all were meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay. Our destination is a place, far greater than we know, for some the journey’s quicker, for some the journey’s slow. And when the journey finally ends, we’ll claim a great reward, and find an everlasting peace, together with the Lord.
