Daniel Richard Hurley of Jupiter, Florida, passed away suddenly and quickly on February 23, 2019, surrounded by his family and doing what he loved most, coaching youth sports. The family thanks all of the people who came to his aid at the Jupiter Community Park making extraordinary efforts to save his life.
Dan was born June 8, 1941 in Elmont, NY, the son of Geraldine R. Miller and Daniel Francis Looney. He spent his early years in Manhattan, NY until the family relocated upstate, splitting their time between Pine Bush and Newburgh NY. Dan received his BA in English from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont and his masters’ degrees from City College of New York and William Patterson University in New Jersey. He taught English in both the Bronx and Brooklyn NY as well as Emerson High School in New Jersey.
Dan, Andrea, Erika and Rachel moved to Jupiter Florida in 1984 when Indiantown Rd. was barely a two lane highway and he joined the English Department at Forest Hills High School. He taught there until the sudden death of his daughter, Rachel, in 1990, at which point he transferred to the Jupiter High School Guidance Department. Dan was an avid sports fan and lifelong athlete who coached student sports throughout his academic career. This included Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Girls’ Track, and Girls’ Golf right up to his first retirement. Dan didn’t take well to retirement and was back at work the following September, teaching English again!
But eventually, after 50 years in the classroom, he discovered the fun and fulfillment of volunteering and joined the Jupiter Hospital and Medical Center Auxiliary where he worked in both Motor Aid and Pre-Op. Two days a week he played with his golf buddies and one day led tours of the Jupiter Lighthouse where he especially loved his grade school groups. He thoroughly enjoyed the people he worked with and always brought home wonderful stories. Those who knew Dan appreciated his own love of storytelling and as a small child growing up his nickname was “Say a Few Words, Dan” and he never failed to do so.
He will be sorely missed and remembered by the love of his life, Andrea Hurley to whom he was married for 48 years; his daughter, Erika DeOreo, of Jupiter and her husband Bryan; grandchildren, Maia and Bryson; Sister, Karin Edwards of Jupiter and Falmouth MA and her family, Robert, Elizabeth, Daniel, Cathleen, Sam and Charlotte, and Richard and JoAnn Weber of Jupiter.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at Aycock-Riverside Funeral and Cremation Center, 1112 Military Trail, Jupiter. There will be a private internment for family members. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate all donations made to the Rachel Hurley JTAA Scholarship fund, JTAA Memorial Scholarship, c/o Adam Magun, 200 Military Trail, Jupiter Florida 33458.
