Born in Havana, Cuba, he emigrated to the United States in 1962 as a boy and grew up in Queens, New York. A graduate of the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic, and a widely respected trauma and critical care surgeon, he devoted his career to providing lifesaving, compassionate care to patients and their families in New York and Florida, especially those who were immigrants like himself.
He loved the New York Yankees, classic rock, Cuban cooking, his dogs (Lucy and Desi), and sports cars. But he loved his family the most. He especially never ceased bragging about the achievements of his two sons, and he adored his grandchildren (who knew him as "Papa").
He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Isabel and his mother-in-law, Norma Hollander.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Beth; his son, Michael, wife Heather (Torretta) and grandson, Daniel; his son, Alex, wife Andrea (Duclos) and granddaughter, Marlowe Paloma; his siblings, Alberto, Isabel (Hernández), and Juan Carlos; his sister-in-law, Amy Stern, and his father-in-law, Steve Hollander. They will miss him with all their hearts.
