Known as Ross to his friends and family, he started school in a one room school house and later graduated from Caledonia High School in MI in 1944 at the age of 16. He then went on to attend Grand Rapids Jr. College before enlisting in the Army of Occupation in 1946. While he was stationed in Omiya, Japan and was briefly based at the foot of Mt. Fuji and had the great experience of climbing. After his service in Japan he came back to study and graduate from the University Of Michigan Ross School Of Business earning his BBA and MBA in Accounting in 1950.
After interning with Ernst & Ernst Accounting Firm, he accepted a job with them in September of 1950. This employment lasted 35 years and resulted in Ross becoming a partner with the firm on October 1, 1968 while in Akron, OH and later transferring to Miami in 1971 and finishing his career in Tokyo, Japan on September 30, 1985.
In 1985, Ross and Charlotte retired to Akron, OH and Boynton Beach, FL. In 1996 they moved again to reside in Turtle Creek East in Tequesta, FL.
He loved to travel and managed to visit 30 countries and as many U.S. States during his lifetime. He is a member of the University of Michigan President’s Club, the Kiwanis Club of Akron, served as the Vice President of the University of Michigan Tokyo Alumni Club, a member of the Palm Beach County U of M Club, the Fairlawn Country Club and Portage CC in Akron, Miami CC and Calusa CC of Miami, Riviera CC of Coral Gables, Quail Ridge CC of Boynton Beach, the Turtle Creek Club of Tequesta and Mt. Fuji CC in Japan.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Merle (Lois) and a sister, Marjorie Vander Laan (Jim).
Ross is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Charlotte; three children, Virginia McCans (Donald), Bryant Miller (Christine) and Gary Miller (Carla); eight grandchildren, Mark McCans (Stephanie), Scott McCans, Eric McCans, Ross S. Miller (Reba), Paul Miller, Kailey Miller, Conner Miller, and Holland Miller; three great grandsons, Jackson McCans, Owen McCans and Calvin Ross Miller; a sister, Marilyn DeVries (Dale) and a sister-in-law, Susan Nicholas (Albert).
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Waterford Health Center for their loving care through the difficult last year and a half of Ross’s life.
A Celebration of life will be celebrated on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 12:00 pm at AYCOCK-RIVERSIDE FUNERAL AND CREMATION CENTER, 1112 Military Trial, Jupiter, FL. Burial will be held at 3:00 pm at Riverside Memorial Park, 19351 SE County Line Rd., Tequesta, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Morikami Museum, 4000 Morikami Park Rd., Delray Beach, FL 33446.
