Stig was preceded in death by his parents, Gunnar and Solveig Wennerstrom, and his sister, Annette. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Britt-Marie; his children Jessica (Thomas), Linda (Ed), and Henrik (Bryna); and his five grandchildren: Matilda, Isac, Tim, Sofia, and Lucas.
Growing up on Sweden’s west coast, Stig found his lifelong passion in sailing. He spent countless hours on the water, and his love for the sport sparked a competitive spirit that led him to international acclaim. He won the 1970 World Championship in the Star class and earned a silver medal in the Soling class at the 1972 Olympic Games in Germany. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Stig was inducted into the Swedish Sailing Hall of Fame in 2020.
Stig earned an MBA from the University of Gothenburg and brought the same drive and vision he had on the water into the business world. He founded Forcenergy and led several other ventures in oil and gas exploration, as well as commercial and residential real estate. He was notable for his determination and vision, clearly reflected in the results of his work.
In his later years, Stig, helped by his wife Britt-Marie, designed and project-managed the building of several homes—some in Florida, always within reach of the ocean, and others in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, with sweeping views over the autumn leaves.
The sailing world will remember Stig for his remarkable achievements and the business world for his creativity and determination. But to his family, he will be remembered most as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Despite his busy career, he always made time for unforgettable adventures—catching lobsters in the Bahamas, skiing the slopes of Colorado, or simply sharing stories around the dinner table.
Stig was a larger-than-life figure who commanded the attention of every room he entered. His absence will be felt sorely by his loved ones and the many people whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held in late 2025, with details to follow.
