
He retired in 1977 from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as a civilian architect, one of his more notable design projects is the Haiku Stairs in Windward Oahu. After retirement he built his home in Kokomo, Maui where he spent his years as a "gentleman farmer" growing citrus fruits, bananas, and a variety of vegetables.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m.; with mass over urn to begin at 11:00 a.m.; continue to his final resting place will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe at 2:00 p.m.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Mary Francis Leandro Caires; son, Michael John (Leanne D.) Caires; daughters, Dannette (Joaquin “Jei” Manaois) Caires, Marla K. (Richard P.) McManus, Ann M. (James “Kimo” III) Taylor; grandchildren, Keani M. McManus, Janel Kau’i Hayden, Jamie N. (Gavin) Fujioka, Daniel I. Caires, Michael K. Caires, Allysa Mahie Taylor, Noell Pomai Corpuz and 12 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, family request donations to be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church and/or the Holy Name Society Men’s group.
