It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother on October 5th, 2026, in her 98th year. As a family, we were truly blessed to have her in our lives. She made each and every one of us feel special in her own way. Born in Watson, Saskatchewan, to Niels and Annie Olsen, the family moved to Chilliwack, BC, when Gladys was in her teens. After graduation. Gladys moved to Kamloops to work at Tranquille TB Sanitorium where she met her husband, Ken Hartnell.
Mom had a passion for giving back and was a familiar and welcoming face throughout the region. Whether supporting the summer and winter games or welcoming guests as a dedicated usher at the arena, she loved being right in the heart of the community. Her empathy shone brightest through her deeply meaningful work with Kamloops Victims Services. She showed incredible strength and compassion as she navigated Kamloops after dark to support those in their time of need. When she wasn’t helping others, Mom found true joy in the simple pleasures in life. She loved going for long walks and embraced a lifelong passion for curling. Nothing brought a bigger smile to her face or greater joy to her heart than watching her grandchildren participate in sports.
Her love for travel took her to many places including Peru and a special trip with her daughter, Liz, to Bali. She spent much time with her grandson and family in Florida. She was famous for her great meals and hosted many family get togethers. Whenever relatives were in town, Mom’s house was the first stop. She was our central news hub, always sharing the latest family updates.
Gladys will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Gary (Emelyn), Lee (Carol), Chris (Donna), daughter Liz (Earl), 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Einar, Eric, Orla, and her twin sisters, May and Maisie.
The Family extends a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Howie and the staff at Overlander Extended care where Gladys spent her final years. A special thank you to Jodi for her Kindness.
A memorial to celebrate Gladys’s life will be held at a later date.
