With immense sadness we must announce the death of Janice Inglis on Sunday evening, 27th of September, 2026. Janice was first diagnosed with cancer in April of 2025. At the beginning of September of this year her condition suddenly began to deteriorate, culminating in her death. Her intellect, memory and bravery were undiminished right to the end.
Janice was born at Royal Inland Hospital on the 23rd of December, 1941 to Elizabeth (Querns) and Maurice Owen who pre-deceased her in 1977 and 2005, respectively. Janice was the second of eight children, namely Trevor (Delores), Murray (Pat), Maureen Simpson (Al), Richard (Valerie), Heather Semeniuk (Dennis), Elaine Moon (John), and Ann-Marie Hunter (Rob), all of whom survive her.
Janice was educated at St. Ann’s Academy, Notre Dame University, and the University of British Columbia (UBC). She then began her teaching career at St. Ann’s as a primary school teacher.
In 1965 she married Robert Hilton and gave birth to four children, namely Michael (Belinda), Thomas (Crystal), Jeffrey (Maria) and Teresa Dickmeyer (Stephen). The marriage then dissolved, and so Janice, with tremendous resolve, as a single mom with four kids to look after embarked on further study at UBC to upgrade her skills. While there she met Don Inglis, and in 1976 they were married. Don survives her after over 50 years together. They had two more children, Peter (Erin) and Alexander, who also survive her.
Janice is also survived by fourteen beloved grandchildren: Brandon Hilton, Braedyn Hilton (Cara), Maxwell Dickmeyer (Melody), Anna-Maria Hilton, Scott Dickmeyer, Matteo Hilton, Adrianna Hilton, Owen Hilton, Tyler Hilton, Emmet Inglis, Heath Inglis, Harvey Inglis, Tessa Inglis and Marcus Inglis.
During her first marriage Janice lived in Kamloops and Calgary. With Don she lived briefly in Kamloops, and then was based in North Vancouver from 1976 to 2000. During this time she and the family spent two years (1979-80) living in and exploring Don's homeland of South Africa, a period of her life that she particularly enjoyed. In 2000 she and Don moved to Rayleigh in Kamloops, where she lived until her death.
During her time in North Vancouver, Janice was a parishioner at St. Stephen’s Church, where she taught catechism for many years. In Kamloops, Janice was a pre-school teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School for a number of years, following which she taught catechism, and ran the catechism program at St. John Vianney Catholic Church for 15 years.
While in Rayleigh she was a parishioner and pianist in the choir at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Heffley Creek.
As a lifelong Catholic, Janice had a clear, simple, and unwavering faith in the power, wisdom and goodness of God, and she looked to Him whenever she felt the need for solace and comfort.
Her over-arching love was for other people, and especially all children, with whom she shared an instinctive and mutual deep trust and understanding. Whenever she thought it appropriate, she would use this bond to quietly impart her values of faith, truth, kindness, thoughtfulness and caring.
Janice will never be forgotten by anyone fortunate enough to have known her.
