"Eulogy"
For those of you who may not know me, Lino Luison was my Nonno. He was dearly loved by his wife, Elsa, four children, seven grandchildren and great grandson. Lino was born in Treviso, Italy on September 17, 1933. He later immigrated to Canada in 1954.
Nonno can be remembered as somewhat of a solemn man, but there was never any doubt that he loved his family. He followed his brother, Tranquillo, to Canada and made his way from Toronto to Louis Creek so they could be close by each other. He then met his future wife, Elsa, on a trip back to Italy in 1959 and promptly brought her to Canada to start a life together in 1960. They had four beautiful children, all of whom he instilled the value of family. It is this trait that will forever be ingrained in us and will be passed down through generations. Family first.
In order to take care of his family, Nonno took pride in being a very hard worker. He worked at the sawmill in Louis Creek and then at the Kamloops Weyerhaeuser sawmill for twenty-seven years. He received many awards for his dedication to the company and his ingenuity, even creating a part for a machine that Weyerhaeuser implemented in many other mills. Lino also completed his Millwright ticket and was respected by both the people above and below his within the company. I think that is what he was most proud of as he would always tell his grandchildren those stories and bring us downstairs to show us all the certificates on the wall. It was always a given that if we brought a friend to Nonno’s and Nonna’s, there would be a trip downstairs so they could see all his achievements too.
Though he worked hard, there was always time for a little mischief and relaxing. I remember many camping trips, mostly to White Lake, Roche Lake and Tranquille Creek. There was always lots of jokes and teasing between he and his friends, especially during games of bocce and cards. Nonno could always be counted on to tweak his grandchildren’s ears or give them a little tap on the back of the head when passing by, followed by Nonna giving Nonno a swift reprimand. I will forget that mischievous twinkle in his eyes and smile on his face.
Lino Luizon was a gruff, proud man full of love and good times. Although he is gone from this world, he will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts.
"Remember Me"
Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow,
but remember me in every tomorrow.
Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles,
I’ve only gone to rest a little while.
Although my leaving causes pain and grief,
my going has eased my hurt,
and given me relief.
So dry your eyes and remember me,
not as I am now, but as I used to be.
Because, I will remember you all,
and look on with a smile.
Understand in your hearts,
I’ve only gone to rest a little while.
As long as I have the love of each of you,
I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.
