It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, Mary Flora Johnson, on April 28, 2026. Flora is survived by her daughter, Katherine and son, Bill (Wanda), her grandchildren Cassie and Sara Johnson, niece Gail (Dean) Wichmann as well as other extended family including nephew, great-niece and great-nephews. Flora is predeceased by her parents, Alice Spicer Sandberg and Edwin Sandberg, brother Carl Sandberg and sister-in-law, Shirley Sandberg Brown.
Flora was born in Vancouver, BC on June 3, 1947. She married Keith Johnson in 1966 and moved to various locations in BC, including Prince Rupert, where daughter Katherine was born. In 1967 they moved to Smooth Rock Falls Ontario where son Bill was born before returning to British Columbia in 1969. The family lived in various places in the Lower Mainland and also moved to Calgary, Alberta for about 5 years, before returning to her beloved British Columbia in 1984, spending the last 40 years in Kamloops.
Flora spent her working life being a bookkeeper for various companies, ending her career working for her nephew, Dean Wichmann, and Kamloops Personal Care Home.
Flora was a dedicated mom who used her creative skills to provide a fun and interesting childhood for her children. She had a wide range of interests and was always game to try anything new. Flora was an incredibly talented artist and could turn the most mundane objects into the most beautiful and interesting art.
Flora loved to travel – some of the family’s most treasured memories come from the trips that they took. She had a bright curiosity about the world and never stopped learning. She also loved wine and visiting local wineries and learning about (and tasting) wines was often a significant part of her travels.
Flora will be missed by all for her warm heart, infectious smile and big laugh. Although she faced many health challenges in her later years, she was always ready with a joke or to see the funny side of life.
The family wish to thank the care staff at Overlander Extended Care Home for their compassionate care of Flora.
An informal gathering for family and friends to share stories and remember Flora will be held on May 6, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm in the Community Room at 1085 12th Avenue, Kamloops. Memorial donations in memory of Flora may be made to the RIH Cancer Department through the RIH Foundation, or to Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon.
