A longtime resident of Kamloops, Paddy was born in Limerick, Ireland where he met his future wife, Peggy Madigan. At age 25, Paddy migrated 7000 km in January 1952 to find work that would allow him to afford marriage to Peggy and have a family. He caught a freighter to St John, NB and took the train across Canada landing in Kamloops where he got a job with the Kamloops Lumber Company (subsequently Weyerhaeuser Canada). Paddy was joined by Peggy in September 1952, and they were married in Kamloops. For most of his working career, Paddy managed lumber retail sales from a location near the Red Bridge in Kamloops and was well known by builders and construction companies in the Kamloops area. Paddy was a determined and resourceful person, and he built his first home in Powers Addition without really any experience. He hand-dug the basement which he enclosed and then moved his family to the partially built house. He gradually finished the house as he could afford it. Debt was something Paddy shunned throughout his life.
Paddy and Peggy were married for 67 years before Peggy died in 2020. Paddy is survived by his four sons: Sean (Patricia), Dermot (Brenda), Patrick (Marylou) and Garret (Winnifred). He is also survived by 11 grand-children (located in Canada, USA and New Zealand), 14 great grand-children, a sister, Anne Fitzgibbon, in Limerick, Ireland and three sisters-in-law, Joan Looby (Ireland), Patricia Lane (Ireland) and Brenda Madigan (Canada) and one brother-in-law, Sean Madigan, in Canada, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Ireland, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Paddy was predeceased by his parents Gerard and Nora Lane, his brothers Dermot, Michael (Mick), Gerard (GP) and John, sisters-in-law Doreen, Daphne and Ursula and brothers-in-law Paddy, Louis, Tom and John.
Paddy loved living in Canada and became a citizen as soon as possible. Prior to emigrating,he’d enjoyed hunting and fishing, pastimes he shared with his father. But Canada offered a much richer and varied experience with Peggy and his four sons, or his friends. In 1960, Paddy built a cabin on Heffley Lake, and summers for Peggy and his sons were generally spent at the lake. Besides the cabin, Paddy travelled widely across BC for hunting, fishing and family vacations. The more remote and challenging the access to a location, the better Paddy enjoyed it!
Paddy and Peggy retired at 60, an age that would allow them an active retirement. Paddy and Peggy enjoyed the snowbird lifestyle in winter, travelled to Ireland visiting family, and trips across western Canada visiting their far-flung sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. This eventually slowed in their latter 70’s, but Paddy continued to ride his bicycle until he was 90. He remained very close to his sons and their families and was always available for a visit and a cupof coffee.
Paddy was a great father and grandfather. He loved nothing more than spending time with his sons hunting, fishing, bicycling, camping or sitting on the deck having a beer. His family will remember his pleasant, thoughtful disposition, his honesty and rock-solid reliability, and his courteous demeanor; he set a high example for us to follow.
The family would like to thank the care staff, doctor and medical staff of Gemstone Care Home - they are truly amazing people with the quality of care they provided Paddy for the last 4 years.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on June 16, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops.
