Robert Elon Newstrom

We are saddened to announce that our brother, Robert “Elon” Newstrom, passed away at the age of 81 at Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home in Kamloops, BC, on July 31, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Powell River BC, on January 26, 1945, Elon was a grandson of Keremeos pioneer Harry Tweddle, a beloved grandfather who delighted all of the “boy” cousins on his ranch in Keremeos. Known as Bobby in those early years, Elon moved with his family from Keremeos to Penticton and later to Oliver, BC, where he graduated from South Okanagan Secondary School in 1965.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Simon Fraser University, Elon never stopped learning. He continued his education at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops where he became a familiar and well-loved figure on campus, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, followed by additional studies in the arts.

Over the years, Elon enjoyed a varied career that included social counselling, working on oil rigs, ranch work, and many other pursuits. Above all, however, he was an artist—a poet and sculptor whose unique talents were admired and appreciated by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Margaret Newstrom (Tweddle), Elon is survived by his three sisters: Elna Newstrom of Kelowna, BC; Linda Newstrom-Lloyd of Havelock North, New Zealand; and Annie Hiltz (Bernie) of Mount Denson, Nova Scotia; his nephew, Brian Hale (Annette); his niece, Tania Greenwood; his cousin Greg Durnan of Arizona; and many other cousins in Canada and the United States.

Our family would especially like to acknowledge our cousin Greg Durnan, whose love, unwavering support, and many kindnesses in Elon's final days have meant more to us than words can express.

Elon also leaves behind dear friends, notably Chuck St. John and Craig Scott, whose steadfast friendship and generous support helped him through what he affectionately called his “circumstances” over his last months.

Our family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home for the exceptional care, understanding, and kindness they showed Elon and all of us who shared his final weeks. We also wish to thank Father Clinton of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops for his kindness, compassion, and spiritual care.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Kamloops Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Light refreshments will follow in the parish hall. A private interment will take place at Keremeos Cemetery.
