Hi Wendy,
I was so sad to hear of Bert's passing. You were neighbors to my parents, Bob and Shirley Gray. My most sincere condolences.

I only knew Bert briefly in the sailing club, he always was there to help. A kind man with generous smiles. Condolences.

Amongst the Wednesday night sailing crowd, Bert was especially well known for his abilities as a downwind sailor in light winds. His technique was to get his body as far forward on the boat as possible, and to heel the boat over to get the sail as high above the water as he could, to catch the most air. Every once in a while Bert went overboard with this technique. Literally. He'd go sliding off the deck and into the water, to the delight of those racing against him. He was always a good sport.

Bert did much to contribute to the Kamloops Sailing Association over the years. He and his friend Stu Bates became Laser sailboat dealers in the 1970's. He was a Wednesday night sailor at Stump Lake when I arrived in 1986. He was part of the group that constructed the sailing site at Nicola Lake for the 1993 Canada Summer Games. I'll remember Bert flipping pancakes at the site, feeding the young competitors, at another of the regattas that we held.

We are missing him.
