Gwendolyn Amabel Higgins, 79 of Waimanalo, Oahu died on Friday, September 24, 2021. Gwen was born in Hoolehua, Molokai on September 26, 1941, to Edith and Charles Meyer. She had three siblings: Yola M. Forbes (David), Charles S. Meyer (Carolyn), Robert P. Meyer (Nancy).
As a child, Gwen enjoyed hunting, sports and being with family. She boarded at Kamehameha School as a 7th grader and enjoyed the many activities the school offered, one of which was the school dances, which was her favorite that she attended with friends. Gwen grew to enjoy her years at Kamehameha school where she met many friends and have remained friends till this day.
After graduating from Kamehameha, Gwen attended Honolulu Community College where she studied Business. While attending college, Gwen met the love of her life, Albert G. Higgins. They spent much time enjoying each other’s company until they were married on March 18, 1961.
They had 4 children, Debra Lehua, Robyn Ilima, Albert George (Duke), Christopher Holt.
As a young family, Gwen loved taking her children to her hometown of Ho’olehua, Molokai during their summer vacations. They learned a lot about growing up on a farm and farm life. She also planned yearly weekend long trips to Kuilima (Turtle Bay) for the family. The family also enjoyed trips to Lake Tahoe, Disneyland, and the Big Island.
After raising her children, Gwen became a SASA for the Department of Education at various schools, Blanche Pope Elem., Kailua High School, Hahaione Elem., Waikiki Elem., and Myron B. Thompson Academy. Gwen met many more friends along this journey thru working at these schools and has remained friends till this day. Gwen finally retired in 2012.
Throughout her life, Gwen enjoyed the game of golf which her father in-law introduced her to and she became an active member of the Hawaii Mixed Golf Club for over 50 years. If you couldn’t find Gwen lawn mowing her yard, you could find her on some fairway at one of the many golf courses the islands had to offer with her club.
She also enjoyed spending time with her many classmates and friends at the various class reunions, Christmas luncheons and golf parties that she looked forward to helping with and organizing.
Gwen also looked forward to going to Las Vegas every February, with her classmates. Her four children, their spouses, and some of her grandchildren joined in on the fun.
Gwen’s greatest and most valued treasures in life was her family! Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren! They each individually and as a whole brought her so much pride and joy! She traveled yearly to the mainland to visit her daughter Robyn and family in California for Thanksgiving and sons Duke and Chris and their families in Washington State for Christmas. She spent every other holiday at home on Oahu with daughter Debbie and family.
Gwen will forever be missed by the many who knew her. To know her was to love her.
