Butch was born on July 10, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, to George and Carrie Ottens. A proud graduate of Wyandotte High School, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, he returned home and built a long and dedicated career as an electrician, eventually retiring from USD 500. His strong work ethic and steady presence earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Butch found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved bowling and spending time outdoors, whether casting a line while fishing or enjoying a peaceful day on the water boating. A devoted fan of John Wayne, Butch admired the grit and character portrayed on the silver screen. It was while out dancing that he met the love of his life, Donna, beginning a partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and countless shared memories.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his siblings, Mary Karl, Franklin Ottens, Donald Ottens, and Rosie Martin.
Butch is survived by his loving wife, Donna; his children, Cindy Quaintance, Susan (Tom) Mills, Mark (Tina) Herz, and Scott Herz; as well as his treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and more friends than could ever be counted, each touched by his easygoing spirit.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a graveside service immediately following at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
In true Butch fashion, we do not say goodbye, only...“Bye for now…”
