Born on August 18, 1955, in Boston, MA, Gary grew up in Whitman alongside his seven siblings and his parents Gordon, and Blanche (Walker) Peterson. Gary attended Eastern Nazarene College, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to serving God and his community. He had a heart for those in the inner city. As the Reverend at Ruby Avenue in Kansas City, KS, his preaching and compassionate service for others impacted many lives. After serving as the Reverend at Ruby Avenue, Gary transitioned to a role as a caregiver and was a long-time member of Willard Avenue Baptist Church. He moved to Eerie, PA with his wife Sharon and spent much of his time working in-home health as a caregiver serving the underprivileged because of his natural ability to work with adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. After being in Erie for some time, Gary returned to Kansas City to be with his children and grandchildren, whom he loved very much. Gary became actively involved with Victory Hills Baptist Church upon his return to Kansas and enjoyed going to the activities there multiple times a week. Even during his final days, Gary remained devoted to his faith, leading a Monday afternoon Bible study through the book of John at the Medical Lodge where he resided.
Gary’s love for music was evident in his enjoyment of singing along to hymns and worship songs. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—especially spaghetti—and was known for his warmth and openness that made everyone feel welcome. Gary approached life with joy and optimism and a desire to form connections with others. He is also known for his love for his family. Though Gary moved to different places, he always made it a priority to stay connected with his Massachusetts family and his beloved children. As the years went on, Gary enjoyed making trips to visit his children and grandchildren and made many happy memories with them.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sharon Sullivan, as well as his children Michael Peterson (Anna), Tim Peterson (Tiffany), and Julie Peterson; and their mother, Cindy Boyer. He is also remembered by his siblings Lori Shea, Kim Cromwell, Craig Peterson, Glenn Peterson, Lisa Dudley, and Melisa Castelo. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon, his mother, Blanche, and his brother, Kurt.
A visitation will be held at Victory Hills Baptist Church located at 2010 N 66th Terrace, on Saturday, January 17 beginning at 10am. A funeral service will follow at the same location beginning at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Gary's name to Willard Avenue Baptist Church or Victory Hills Baptist Church.
