Rod was born on August 25, 1956, the eldest of two to George B. and Shirley (Overcash) Stroup in Kansas City, Kansas. After graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1975, Rod went on to pursue a degree from Kansas City Area Vocational Technical School (AVTS). Rod spent his career in a job he loved designing, building, and troubleshooting electronic devices for military contracts at Honeywell (previously Allied Signal) for over 44 years.
Rod loved swimming, skiing (both water and snow), and golfing. He formally had a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying prop planes. He often visited wineries and breweries with family and loved watching the Chiefs. Rod was fascinated with computers and electronics. He liked dissembling and rebuilding things, as well as growing his knowledge in any mechanical or electrical process. His passion for aeronautics, science, and astronomy never went unnoticed.
Rod was known by all as a mentor, a comedian, and a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. Rod is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, his sister Denise and her husband Robert “Book” Glenn, his children Christopher Stroup, Andrea Stroup, and Stephen & Kelsey (Flanegin) Stroup, his stepchildren Rob & Wendy (Christman) Cooper, and Wayne Cooper. He is also survived by two nephews, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He will be remembered and dearly missed by family, friends, and coworkers.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas. A funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, followed by a graveside service in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family also welcomes everyone to attend a Celebration of Life party to cheers a beer and remember Rod at Brewbaker’s Bar & Grill (9482 Renner Blvd, Lenexa, KS 66219) on Wednesday, February 23rd from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
