Lilian M. Fitzsimons, 93, peacefully passed away June 25, 2017 at Delmar Gardens. She was born Oct. 2, 1923 in Ottery St. Mary, Devon, England to George and Ida Isaac, who owned a quaint English Pub called “The HalfMoon Inn.” She was taught knitting as a child in school and became a wizard at this skill.
During England’s war effort, she worked in a London plane parts plant, where air raids and blackouts were a daily occurrence. During this time, she met and married her “Soulmate,” Sgt. Emmet (Al) Fitzsimons, U.S. Army. Al recently passed but their union lasted almost 72 years. She missed him dearly.
Military life is not easy, especially for the wife. This nomadic life style has built-in challenges of uncertainty, constant change, separation, and worry. Mom was up to the task!
Upon Dad’s retirement, they set down permanent roots in KC, KS and it was nice. She had many friends that she met through bowling, church, and of course, knitting. Family gatherings, Royals baseball, and the annual trips to S. Padre Island were her favorite memories. She could knit anything (without a pattern) but she was best known for her slippers she generously gave to friends and family for 50 years.
Her life was devoted to her husband, family, and friends. She will be missed by many.
She is survived by daughter, Lynn/Jack Hoyt, son, Patrick/Mindy Fitzsimons; grandchildren, Brian/Becky Rauter, Jason/Mary Rauter, Kevin Rauter, Brandon Fitzsimons, Megan Tweed, Morghan Fitzsimons, and six great grandchildren. Her daughter, Catherine Fitzsimons, rests in Peace at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery. Surviving siblings (England), Raymond Isaac/Pam, and Jimmy Isaac/Diane. Deceased siblings, Roy Isaac, Barbara Isaac, and Sally White.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am, Monday, July 3rd at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, KS, with visitation time from 10:00-11:00am at the church preceding the Mass. Interment with Honors will follow at 1:30 pm in Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
