Sandra “Sandy” Kay (Hunt) Jarratt was born on November 17, 1946 in Kansas City, MO, to Carl Hunt and Mary Kathryn (Thomas) Hunt. The family moved to Munster, IN where Sandy spent her elementary school years, and then the family returned to Kansas City.
Girls Scouts were a big part of Sandy’s growing up years, from Brownies up through Senior Scouts, and she even enjoyed several summers as a Girl Scout camp counselor. Sandy graduated from Center High School in 1965 and then went to the University of Kansas to pursue a Physical Therapy degree.
As a college sophomore, her life took a beautiful turn when she met Jack Jarratt from Kansas City, KS. Sandy’s roommate Betty was engaged to Jack’s roommate, John, and after many KU sporting events, concerts on campus, and trips to the ice cream shoppe, Jack and Sandy decided to make it official. They were married 3 days before Christmas in 1967 and finished their schooling at KU several years later.
They moved back to Kansas City to be near their families, and the next 8 years brought three daughters. In addition to raising her children and being involved in her church, Sandy worked many years as a physical therapist, serving in hospitals, nursing homes, and with home health care. She became especially interested in serving children, so she earned her Masters Degree in Pediatric Physical Therapy in 1990. She helped children in both the KCK and Turner school districts until her retirement in 2005.
Retirement allowed her to care for her mom in their home for several years, as well as host many missionaries and friends for overnight visits and several families long-term. Retirement also brought the chance to travel, and she and Jack were blessed to travel to all 50 states and 4 continents. Sandy’s most current focus was serving as the Director of the STOREhouse food pantry ministry at Stony Point Christian Church. Sandy and Jack served God together at Stony Point for more than 40 years.
Sandy was a beautiful woman of beautiful spirit, who loved God, her family, her church and all of God’s creation. She made friends with all she met. If she worked on a project related to the church or her faith, it had to be done to the best of her abilities because it was being done for Him and His Glory. Sandy was a devoted wife of 56 years, mother of 3, grandma to 8 and grandma-in-law to 4. She was a prayer warrior, Sunday school teacher, pantry worker, deaconess, Kingdom builder, disciple maker, and overall servant of the Lord. Sandy’s heart held a special place for missionaries because her grandparents served in Puerto Rico. Sandy was an excellent organizer, housekeeper, cook, caretaker, Girl Scout leader, Bible Bowl sponsor, and summer camp counselor.
Sandy enjoyed so many things about God’s creation – she saw nature as a reflection of God’s heart. She loved the mountains, beaches, the Flint Hills and everything in between. Sandy spent many days at the family lakehouse in Edwards, MO, that she helped build with her dad. She took many camping trips with friends and family, as well as had many adventures river rafting, canoeing, skiing, sailing, and hiking. Hallmark movies, old musicals, good fiction, 60’s music, going to various grandkid events and doing things for others were favorite ways to spend her time. “Eat dessert first!” was her life philosophy. However, electronics and fishing were NOT on her wish list, as her beloved Jack would tell you. Sandy read her Bible daily and spent countless hours studying and writing about God’s character and how He is present in our daily lives. She prayed for many people each day and showed concern for the details of each of their situations. Sandy believed that all people are created equal and belong to the same family.
Sandy displayed God’s love in every way she could. Even near the end of her life, her faith was evident to those caring for her. When asked if she needed to speak with a chaplain at the hospital, she declined and said, “Me and God are tight!” Sandy never complained about her personal pain and truly wanted God to use her cancer to bring other people to know Him more. She fought the good fight and completed her race on the morning of Saturday February 24, 2024, in her home, surrounded by family.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Jack, and daughters Melissa (Roger) Underwood of Smithville, MO, Wendy (Howard) Goldsmith of El Dorado, KS and Brenda Wardle of Kansas City, KS. She is also survived by her brother Larry (Cathy Beise) Hunt of Westminster, MD, and her beloved grandchildren Rachel and husband Kyle, Nathan and wife Rachel, Hannah and husband Kyle, Bethanie and husband Colton, Carlee, Wyatt, Alivia and Mariah. Sandy had many other relatives and friends that will miss her as well.
The celebration of Sandy’s life will be held Saturday March 2nd at Stony Point Christian Church, 149 South 78th Street, in Kansas City, KS. Visitation begins at 9am with a service at 11am. Graveside service will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
