William Henry (Hank) Turnbaugh, Jr., 87, of Eudora, Kansas, was born May 26, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas, and passed peacefully to Heaven on February 12, 2021. He was preceded in death by Patricia Jane (Suggs), his loving wife of 58 years, his parents, William Henry and Vernie (Myers) Turnbaugh, Sr., and William Arthur and Dorothy (Campbell) Suggs, and his brothers, Rodney Turnbaugh, Kenneth Turnbaugh and William Arthur (W.A.) Suggs, Jr. He is survived by his children; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Shari (Gilliam) Turnbaugh, and daughter, Lynette Turnbaugh (Kevin) McFarland (Steve) Blackburn.
Hank was blessed with seven grandsons, two granddaughters and three great grandchildren. Sean and Courtney (Hardeman) McFarland, Ryan McFarland, Kyle McFarland, Josh and Madeline (Pyle) Turnbaugh, Colin McFarland, Christian Turnbaugh and Jacob Turnbaugh. Greats are Charlie Durham McFarland, Ellie Rose and Chloe Grace Turnbaugh. Family was everything to Hank and he proved that every day of his life. He rarely missed a school function, ballgame, or band performance, taking joy in all the interests of his children and grandchildren.
Hank graduated from Argentine High School in 1952. He was a gifted athlete, enjoying football, basketball, and especially baseball. As a pitcher, he signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in his senior year. He and Pat married in 1953 and traveled with his teams. He joined the Army during the Korean War and was a proud veteran.
He and Pat settled in Turner to raise a family and serve their community. Hank is a lifelong member of Emerson Park Christian Church and a 70-year member of Ben Hur Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. Hank and Pat were active in Job’s Daughters Bethel #12 and served as Kansas Grand Guardians. Hank coached many, many youth sports teams through the years, was a member of the Turner School Board and a Kansas State Representative. He was active in both Turner and Eudora Lions Clubs. Hank enjoyed travel, especially to the Colorado mountains, visiting many National Parks and most of the states. Family vacations were a priority.
Hank was an insurance underwriter and agent for Farmers Insurance Group, building a successful agency. Keith joined him in business in 1983 and continues a growing independent agency with his own sons. Until the pandemic, Hank enjoyed a second career with Enterprise.
Hank was a patient, loving man of faith and principle who impacted many lives. He never met a stranger and enjoyed keeping in touch with extended family and friends. Hank was a constant presence and influence, will be terribly missed and very lovingly remembered.
Hank’s service will be held at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home on Friday, February 19, at 2:00. Attendance is limited and temperatures are frigid.
