Carl was born in Atlantic, Iowa to parents Charles and Rosemary Nord. He graduated from Valley High School in Des Moines Iowa where he was the president of his Senior Class. Carl started his college career at Iowa State University in Aimes, Iowa. He then transferred to Drake University in Des Moines where he earned a degree in Journalism.
In 1968, Carl was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He was a first lieutenant and the editor for the 11th Brigade newspaper known as The Trident. Carl earned the Bronze Star for meritorious service for his time spent in Vietnam.
After serving in the military, Carl was hired by Hallmark Cards to serve as the editor of the Noon News daily publication. He met his soon-to-be-wife Kay Emmons of Kansas City while working at Hallmark. Carl and Kay were married on January 6, 1973. Carl and Kay had two children: Christian (1980) and Darcy (1983). He was also the proud Papa of three grandchildren: Wyatt (2006), Graham (2008), and Taylor (2014).
Carl’s friends and family loved him for his sharp wit, his excellent sense of humor and his genuine interest in other people. He could tell a story better than anyone, and he loved to make people smile. Carl will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
