

Brother Charles G. Long, C.Ss.R, 77, of Kansas City, Missouri died on Friday, August 19, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Redemptorist/Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 3333 Broadway, Kansas City, MO. Burial will be in Ligouri, MO. Visitation will be Monday, August 22, 6-8 p.m. at Redemptorist Church. Donations may be made to Redemptorist Church.
Brother Charles was born on April 20, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Peter and Mary (Derringe) Long. He was baptized on May 7, 1939. When he told his mom he wanted to join the clergy, she tried to talk him out of it. In conversation with their parish priest, he advised, “Let him try it and he can leave if he doesn’t like it.” He professed his vows February 2, 1957. Charles died after 59 years as a Brother in the Redemptorist Order. During those 59 years, be ministered in Grand Rapids, MI, Glenview, IL, Detroit, MI, Oconomowoc, WI and the last 20 years at Redemptorist Church in Kansas City. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Keene. Charles’ survivors include two brothers, David Long and Joseph Long, both of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Constance “Connie” Welenc and Mary Baranyi, both of Lake Forest, CA; six nieces and one nephew. He will be missed by his fellow Redemptorist priests and brothers and the faithful of Redemptorist Church.
