Daniel “Danny” Keith Jones passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at his group home in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by his brother, Paul, and dedicated caregivers, just weeks before his 64th birthday.
Born on May 27, 1962, in Kansas City to James G. and Mona (VanTuyl) Jones, Danny arrived at a time when societal norms were not yet enlightened regarding Down Syndrome. A doctor had cautioned his parents against becoming too attached, predicting that Danny would eventually be institutionalized. When Danny was a year old, his parents shared this news with his four older brothers; the family collectively and resolutely decided then and there that would never happen.
Before Danny could crawl, he was pulling himself up in his crib, and at the sound of any music, he would move to the beat. He loved music. On his second birthday, when no one was paying attention, he took his first step from where he was standing toward his Great Grandma Toombs. His brothers spent the afternoon coaxing him to walk further—reaching 15 steps by the end of the day—showing the quiet intensity and stamina that would define his life.
Danny shared an unbreakable bond with his younger sister, Diana. As toddlers, the two were inseparable, often squeezed together in a single stroller. On December 24, 1972, Danny and Diana were baptized together by Walt Wisemore at the Lee’s Summit RLDS congregation (now Community of Christ). Diana remained a steadfast presence, volunteering at the special needs camps and retreats Danny attended, including Camp Moja.
Danny followed in the footsteps of his four Eagle Scout brothers by joining a troop tailored for scouts with special needs, with his parents serving as troop leaders. His energetic and vigorous nature shone through his 50-year involvement in both Scouting and the Special Olympics, where he participated in nearly every sports category. He also enjoyed traveling with his parents on many road trips and cruises.
Danny had a big smile and a jolly presence. A natural entertainer, whether he was dancing a jig, playing table games, impersonating Elvis Presley’s iconic moves, or doing the Polar Plunge as a fundraiser, he brought energy to every situation. He also loved watching old John Wayne movies and Lawrence Welk videos, and was a passionate fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.
Danny was preceded in death by his father, James G. Jones. He is survived by his mother, Mona Jones; his four older brothers: Jim (Pat), Jeff, Mike (Twyla), and Paul; his sister, Diana Jones; his nephew Mark Jones (Erica) and niece Becky Jones (Nathan); and many relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Community of Christ, 1101 NE Independence Ave, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, with visitation and photos beginning at 2:30 p.m. Danny will be laid to rest alongside his parents at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens in private with family.
