

Dave was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Claude and Gertrude Barker 100 years ago. He graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1943. After graduation, he traveled to Washington State where he went to work on building the Ross Hydro Electrical Dam. Three years later he moved back home to go to the University of Nebraska where he got a degree in mechanical and civil engineering. After graduation, he married Leola Hodtwalker. They moved to Independence, Missouri and had three children. During his career Dave worked for Bulter Mfg., Gustin Bacon, Certainteed, and Bendix. He considered his patent of metal roof fastener (MR24) one of his highest achievements. This fastener is still used throughout the steel industry 50 years later.
In retirement he and his wife, Leola, played golf and traveled the world. In 2004, he suffered the loss of his wife and moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. Dave enjoyed a wonderful social life where he found his second life partner, Mickey Danberger. All his life Dave continued to enjoy playing golf, dancing, traveling, and socializing with friends.
He is survived by his good friend and partner Mickey Danberger, daughter Vicki Sorensen, Lincoln, NE; sons Scott (Carol) Barker, Lee’s Summit, MO, and Douglas (Mary) Barker, Seward, NE; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Gertrude Barker, his wife Leola, and his sister Betty Roberts. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 2:00 PM at John Knox Village Chapel (400 NW Murray Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64081.
