David A. “Dave” Bruns, 82, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away at his home on February 25, 2018. Visitation from 6-8pm at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel on Thursday, March 1st with rosary recited at 5:45pm. Mass of Christian Burial 10am Friday, March 2nd at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church in Lee’s Summit with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Dave was born May 2, 1936 in Kansas City, MO to Sarah and Francis Bruns. He was born and raised in Northeast Kansas City where he attended Holy Cross Grade School. Dave graduated from Glennon High School and then enlisted in the Army, serving two years during the Korean War.
Dave returned home and married the love of his life, Elaine and they spent a wonderful 45 years together. He joined the Kansas City Fire Department in 1957 where he served for 36 years and retired in 1993. Dave worked at several stations around the city beginning his career at Station 12 then moving to Station 10. He rose to the position of Fire Chief when he was at Station 35 and later he retired from Station 8 as a Battalion Chief. Over the years, Dave made many lifelong friends with his fellow firefighter fraternity. They were his second family.
Dave moved to the Lee’s Summit area after retirement. He has been an active member of the VFW post 5789. He was also actively involved with his parish, Our Lady of the Presentation, where he volunteered at the Friday Fish Frys and helped sponsored youth mission trips. Dave was loved by many and will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace as he rejoins his wife. Please keep us all in your prayers and you will be in ours.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Elaine Bruns; their son, David Bruns; his brothers, Frank, Bill, Fred, John, Tom and Brother Loren Bruns and his sisters; Ruth, Margaret, Sister Zita Marie, Vincentine and Ann. He is survived by his brother, Jim; his sons, Mike (Vallaire) and John (Anita); his daughter-in-law, David’s wife, Debbie; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and another on the way.
